Mrs. Adesuwa Osazuwa
Happy New School Year to all of you. Please post a blog here and let me know how you are feeling about the class. Chat with your classmates and discuss activities related to the class. I also would like to know anything that you would like to contribute to the class. Anything, both academic and non-academic, as long as it is all school appropriate. Thanks to all of you for making your presence felt, and your voices heard.

Hey everybody! I'm not asking a question, I merely wanted to share a thought. I want to say AHHHH HERE WE ARE! Not only did we get accepted to this program, taken a step towards an opportunity I hope we can all look back with joy and purpose, survived a week (and half, sort of), but we are not alone doing this. Usually, change splits us from others, and we have to find our way again alone. That's what makes change so scary, but we are not alone here. We can get through this change together, strive, succeed! This program has given me the chance to improve myself academically without hesitation due to fear of isolation. So, here is to change. I'm excited what the rest of the year entails for us...

Different teachers have certain styles on writing essays. In this class, when typing/writing our heading for our papers, do we write down the date that the paper is due or do we write the date when we started the paper?

Well, the first couple of weeks of school have been eye opening. Transitioning into this high school/community college program has been challenging. Taking college courses is a lot different than your standard high school classes. I'm sure things will start to smooth out in the coming weeks. What do you guys think? How are you coping with the changes?

Did you guys learned anything today in your college classes? Well, sure mine was interesting about how I learned that people don't even know their rights which is pretty surprising how people get tricked by cops about unreasonable searches. Citizens are just too ignorant to protect their rights, so you guys should better be careful and know your rights.

This schedule at CSNHS is so much more relaxed then other high schools! I feel like I have time for everything and like the college is a second home to me. I'm so glad I made the choice to attend CSNHS! I was able to meet a lot more people, I'm closer to home, and I'm stress free unlike last year, I hope we're all feeling more free here. :-)

Yes, the environment at school does makes people more focused because we have this mind set that when we are in an environment where everybody is working, you have the feeling of working too, it's like a motivation call.

Yes! I totally agree. My schedule is so much more flexible now! I am so glad that I made the decision to transfer to CSNHS. I love the diversity of the students. I just finished midterms for this week, and I am about to crash. Something about relaxing, eating like crazy, and taking a huge nap sounds pleasing. I could simply lay back on my red couch, or splurge myself on a bowl of ice-cream, or cover myself in my large blue quilt and sleep the day off. That would simple, easy, and relaxing. I won't be doing that tonight though. Tonight I am going to redo an assignment one of my teachers has graciously allowed me to fix, come up with an informative speech topic, and possibly finish the math homework due Wednesday. Why? I'm crazy, right? No life, so I consume myself with homework? Yes, and maybe, but it's because I know I'm not the average teenager. The even crazier thing is that neither are you. Sure, you might like to party, hang out, be social, and/or do irresponsible things from time to time, but then why did we come here? There is something about each of us that makes us "of distinguished character". My belief, we should use that to our advantage in whatever our endeavors may be.

I simply can't explain the extent of agreement I have towards your statement. You said that certain aspects make us a,"distinguished character", but you added that we are also alike. How? Because we all have responsibilities that we put first. Sure, we like to be social but we are not ordinary teenagers. Being social is simply secondary in our lives, although we love to be a part of it. Yes, eating ice cream and relaxing couldn't sound more amazing right now, but look at me. I'm sitting here spending my time replying to a journal, because I chose to, because I want to hear you out, because I can relate. I don't think you are crazy at all, I actually think we are a lot alike because I too am doing the exact same thing when in fact I could be catching up on my Dr. Who episodes. Anyways, I don't want to make this longer than it already is, but I really enjoyed reading your journal because now I have the comfort that I'm not the only one who does this. P.S you are an amazing person and I full faith that you will be someone HUGE one day and make a difference in the world, in all dead honesty I truly believe in this :)

I refuse to live my life just as society has us thinking is the "right way". What do I mean by that? Well, I mean how we dream of our future house, our future mate, our future car or job. Why? Everyday is a gift, that's why we call it the present. Stop thinking about how your future might be and instead enjoy everyday and its flaws because flaws are beautiful. Besides it's our flaws that make us human. So live! Stop complaining about the amount of homework you have, or the two hours of sleep and find the positive aspects. We are all living for a reason, each and everyday so make it memorable.

Writing Proficiency is OVER! I liked this year's topics! I won't say them of course, I don't want to be accidentally invalidated for a secrecy policy. I found the first one kind of inspiring, it made me appreciate the importance of my answer a little bit more :) The second topic was interesting. It reminded me of one of Mrs. O's prompts, very subjective, but required substantiation. I hope that the rest of you enjoyed them, and if not - THEY ARE DONE! Have a pleasant evening everyone!

Wow.. It's been a while since I've posted on this blog and it's also been a while since I checked to see what's happening on here. I realized that the reason I don't post on here is because.. I'm at loss for words on what to say on here.. It feels weird if I try to talk about my day or what was the highlight of my day.. Although, I can say something about my new favorite thing: my wooden puzzle ball. It's marvelous, but an advance level. Nerve-wrecking, but wonderful. Three full, stressful hours of trying to solve it. Now that I know the solution, I have non - stop been taking it apart and putting it back together.

Struggled with choosing a topic for my COM class.. Struggled with choosing when to post on here.. Only after midnight works for me. I become more active during the night. Others tell me it's super late, but this is really early for me to sleep right now. So, I figured I might as well post what's been bothering me a bit since we discussed B. Franklin's 13 virtues.

Alright I have a little story to tell you guys. It all began two weeks ago when I was looking quite spiffy on a nice warm Monday afternoon. A drive to Wholes Foods after a long day of school with intentions of buying a quick meal to take home were my initial thought. A glance at the seafood section set my mind into a whirl pool of temptation, now, may I note I am not fond of any delicates from the water world creatures as an entre of my desire. I decided, "What's the harm?" A food titled "Spicy Salmon Roll", was my initiation to a new me. Anyways, with little hope I would like this raw meat, wrapped with black plants of the sea world and stuffed with sticky Asian white rice, I gave my taste buds an excitement! I called it a blessing at first bite, but as days progressed and my desire for sushi arose I began doubting my inner strength to control my need. But, never mind this, tomorrow is another sushi eating adventure at Oyshi! :D

Happy Halloween! OR goodbye should I say since in less than two hours will the clock strike 12 on the holiday. I do not have a quote for tonight, but a quick thought I would like to share. When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When life gives you a pumpkin, you make a jack-o-lantern. When life gives you the ultimatum of either gutting out a squash or not carving your pumpkin, you paint the face instead. That's what I did this Halloween.

Hey guys! So I've been practicing my speech for quite some time now for my communications class and yesterday I had to finally present it. Well, I got up in front of the classroom with a bit of confidence but the moment I started my speech I forgot everything I practiced. I did what most people in my situation would do, I winged it. I said everything I could remember although I was missing a big chunk of my points. Anyways, I ended my speech and went back to my seat sure as ever that I had just earned myself an F. When he passed back the grades I was hesitant in wanting to know, surely assuming that I had failed miserably but couldn't resist and took a look at my grade. A "B"! I had to check the name at the top to make sure it wasn't a mistake but the name clearly spelt "Maria". I did not question how I managed to get that grade. I felt a mixture of shock and pure joy but I didn't whether to cry or to laugh out of excitement.

What exciting news! My grandma is coming to visit on thanksgiving. Let me just make it clear my grandma is the most important person in my life. She is the most light spirited human being on earth and I always come to her for advice. She is very wise but I believe it was all the terrible experiences in her life time that led her to find a way to cope by being more free spirited. She witnessed war, she always feared that my dad would not return home from the soviet union, her brothers died in an earthquake but she was able to escape. Just a couple years ago her only sister had a heart attack and is still incapable of talking or moving. I speak to her everyday because I know she loves it when I call and so do I. I tell her about my day,my troubles and she gives me advice, remindes me to stay positive. My "thati" as I call her, is my world, and I miss her laugh and all that is left of her teeth. I miss her sleep talking, her warm hugs the cute, little, fluffy socks she always wore and her enthusiasm that lightened our home.

Today, I want to use this moment to thank Jorge:) Jorge may be the class clown from time to time, but he is also very kind. It was about 5:10, night was settling back into its throne in the sky, as I made my way to the public library where I am picked up every once in a while from school. Traffic was busy, and I patiently stood at the crosswalk waiting for traffic to clear completely before I proceeded. I must have stood there for a considerable duration as Jorge pulls up to me in his car to ask if I had a ride home. I thanked him for the offer and assured him I did, and he replied that he was just watching out for me. As he drove away, the traffic dissipated almost instantly and I crossed the street to arrive my intended destination.

Hello everyone. Tonight, I consciously caught myself doing something none of us should ever do. I started comparing myself to others. I would check in every so often to check the journal postings and unknowingly compare the amount of replies I've received to others in the class. I had none while some already had two, and I started to come of with scenarios in my head of why that was. Maybe I used too big of words, maybe I am not a good writer, maybe the class hates me, maybe those people are better than me, maybe I'm slacking, maybe maybe maybe maybe... It wasn't until a few hours ago that I realized what I was doing. I was measuring my worth as a writer with numbers. It is like a tweeter measuring their popularity by how many likes they have, or how many friends they have following them. It is ridiculous and unhealthy. I am glad I caught myself when I did. It doesn't matter if I get a single reply on my post or none at all. My worth can only be measured by myself. If you are currently under the impression that your writing stinks because no one, or one person, has replied to your post know that is not true. It is absolutely not true, because all of you are great writers (I MEAN IT)! Never let numbers or symbols rule your self-esteem. That is all they are. Please, I never want any of you to think that your worth (in anything) is determined by other's responses. You are all amazing, beautiful, talented, funny, brilliant, strong, and quirky people...embrace it! Thank you for letting me share this, good night.

Whenever I was a little girl at the age of 5, my grad mother taught me to play the piano. Years of exhausting 4 hour practices and anxiety was what it took to finally master the instrument. With all that being said, I thought that this year I would make my grandmother a meaningful gift in my ceramics class. I made her a "piano mug". Basically, the handle is decorated to look as though it is a piano keyboard. Tomorrow I will present her the gift I made and she has no idea. I hope she likes it!

Today is a day of turkey legs, mashed potatoes, foo-foo, green beans, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. It is easy to lose ourselves in all of these aromatic delicacies, and much easier to lose sight of what this national holiday actually stands for. Today is a day of thanks and giving. Not the day where ovens roar from dawn to the afternoon, nor when we pig out followed by a neighborhood game of football. The pauper citizens of America can still celebrate Thanksgiving, without the gravy and Macy's Parade broadcast, as long as they are grateful for whatever they have in their lives. I am grateful for my family and friends, my health and condition, my triumphs and defeats, my life, my education, and the privilege to be know such wonderful, innovative, sincere, and warm people! I am thankful that I know you. Thank you for sparing me your time, and have a happy Thanksgiving!

So on Wednesday, November 26, I felt hungry and cooked an egg and spam. I was hesitant on the spam, because I never knew how long it has been sitting in our fridge, but I still decided to cook and eat it. After that, I visited Starbucks to get my usual, a Caramel Frap. Then, off to school to meet up with a friend so we could walk to BFG together. Well, it used to be called BFG, until the owner moved to South Korea; now, it's called Strip - 'n - Dip. Delicious food. Walked to Starbucks on Rainbow and then back to school before Math started, but I started to feel sick. Never has that happened before. I figured I got food poisoning from the spam.

For the first time in our lives, my brother and I decided to get each other birthday presents. (Our birthdays are pretty close, in the same month, so whenever we're forced to celebrate it usually falls on the same day.) Normally, we'd trade ten dollar bills, just to shut other people up and perhaps make a mockery of the tradition, however this year we decided to put a little effort into it. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a failure for the both of us. I bought him a shirt that was too small, and he bought me earrings... though my ears aren't pierced. Unable to really do much else, we're returning the gifts, getting our money back, and proceeding to trade our ten dollar bills...

I do not think that anyone will take much interest in this composition, or rather the content of it; however, I feel like writing about it just because it has been in my thoughts over the past ten minutes and has, in my perspective, a quaint appeal to it. Though I doubt any of them can rival our cognition, certainly quite a few of them seem to possess a certain degree of intelligence and even self awareness. (Studies of apes who have been taught sign language or the interaction between cetaceans are some of the best examples of this.) Perhaps someday once we're better able to understand the workings of our own psychology/neurology, we'll be able to properly evaluate the way that animals experience the world.

Winter break at CSNHS is going to be so amazing! I'm going to only have to go to school for about 3 hours a day during the CSN winter break. I am so glad I made the choice to come to this school. Not simply because of that, but my peers are all so nice and amicable, and I am so much less stressed out! Good luck to every one next week.

I have a confession to make. I have a selfish need. I satisfy this need by helping others. You are probably wondering what exactly am I trying to say and what I mean by my selfish need is that, I fulfill self-satisfaction by helping others in need. I help give to charity, I help elders in nursing homes, and I just make sure that those who are less fortunate get a little love. They need hope, and my goal is to give them a reason to smile and to strive for what they want to achieve. Sometimes it is the smallest things that we give that may mean the world to those who have been neglected from human love and care. I visited Armenia over the summer and deceided I would go to a village. I came across this young boy very skinny, with torn up clothing, shoes that flopped off his feet, but he had the most warm heart. I gave him the cookies and crackers that I had originally brought for the trip and he thanked me so generously. As he walked away, I saw his ears rise from the back of his shaved head and I just imagined the smile that must have been on his face. When you think about it, it was only some sweets that I gave right? Something we see everyday and pay little to no attention to, but to this boy who perhaps only sees such things on holidays, brought him such joy. I didn't do much, I didn't give him much but his gratefulness brought me joy and now I search to give such children the same joy because I am doing them good and I feel better about myself :)

I am not sure if this is a Las Vegas thing or not, but I love when it rains! The sky is abundant with the dark and gray carriers, the temperature drops to a staggering low, and the forces of the storm bring vibrancy to this dry and warm town. Today was a particularly nice day, as it was not necessarily fierce, merely a shower. The type of shower that formed great puddles for the brave to jump in, and induced us to cling to our coat for warmth but smile through the light prick of the air. Oh how I love the rain! Everyone have a fantastic weekend, and don't forget to jump in a puddle every once in a while :)

That's so weird how you would say that because when we had to write about one of the Benjamin's 13 virtues that we find the hardest to follow, I wrote about industry. That is really good advice and I always tell myself to "utilize time to be productive" as you said, yet find myself staring at the cottage cheese walls trying to make out figures instead of doing homework:,D

Although I loved exploring and going on adventures all around Europe, I was dying to see my puppy that was back home. She had only been born just a week before break, and I would think of her everyday. She was the love of my life. The moment I saw her I told myself that I was going to take great care of her and train her to be the smartest dog out of the bunch.I had given her the name Mocha since her coat was a coffee tinted brown. I had grown so overly attached to the pup before break that I though of her everyday while I was away.

True, and I hope that your father doesn't take your dogs away:( It only takes one to ruin it all for everyone else, but don't give up on them. As a dog owner you and your family have signed an invisible contract that states that you have taken in another soul into your house and it is your responsibility to protect this life as you would a person. Maybe not as much as a person, but pretty close if you ask me. It's almost like a child, you can't just get rid of your children because they are troublesome. It is much like parenting, just not with a human. Hope things go well in the end!

What a way to begin the year. This new years I decided that I didn't want to stay home, instead I wanted to be out of the house, celebrating with friends. I called my friend from my old high school and asked if he had any plans for today, knowing that he would have some sort of party or hangout. Sure enough he was having a small get together and I bring my best friend, kali, along with me to this hang out. It was 7 pm when I finally arrive to an old, one-story home. Little was I to know what will soon take place on the opposite side of these rustic doors. The door opens with my former high school friend aside it. One look inside and I realize there are only a handful of people here, about seven or eight, simply listening to music. There is no food, no snacks, no soda, and Kali and I were about to leave. I only knew two people there, aside from Kali, and that was my friend from high school and his brother. I couldn't help but feel as though I the wrong scene, the wrong crowd, sitting beside people whom look as though they have no future ambitions. I hadn't known these were the type of people my high school friend associates with, or else I would've stayed home. However, I decided I would give this hang out a chance and I stayed. I set my purse beside me and begin chatting with these people so that I can make further judgement based upon their intelligence and not their physical appearance. I head outside once the clock hits twelve to watch the strip do its spectacular show that does not fail to amuse me every year. Some people inside join me to watch. After starting my way inside the house, one of the room mates asks whether he can use my phone to make a call and of course I reply "Sure". I lost track of how long this guy had my phone and nearly forget it, until I remembered to give my parents a call, so that they know everything is fine. I head back to the living room where a couple of the men were sitting and the roommate who had my phone. I ask to receive my phone back and he replies that he had given it back. This takes me by surprise and I take a moment to recall if I had forgotten he returned it, or he is lying. I get a knot in my stomach, and I know something is wrong. I look over to see if my purse remains where I had left it, in the living room, on the floor. I begin to get confused and I look around for my phone just to be sure I hadn't misplaced it, but my gut is screaming that he had not given it back. I start to get angry, listening to my gut scream, I begin to yell. Accusing him of stealing my phone. Kali tries again and again to call it as I stare at each of the men sitting in the living room knowing that something doesn't feel right. The roommate whom made the phone call with my phone tries to calm me, leading me to the place he made the phone call to help look around for it. It seemed as though he was trying to brush the blame off himself by proving he had not hidden it anywhere. Frustrated after an hour of screaming with no results and my phone no where to be heard. Kali calls my brother, telling him that we need his assistance. In less then ten minutes he arrives with friends, anger clouds his eyes. We get kicked out of the house soon enough and it was not until my brother and I are on the ride home when I realize that my purse was left in the living room when I went out to watch the fireworks. I suddenly felt sick to my stomach and frantically started looking inside my bag to make sure this feeling is true. Sure enough, my wallet was not inside my bad and I realized that the handful of people sitting in the living room were all in on it.

This may come as a no-brainer, but don't hang around them anymore. I encourage you to be social and explore new experiences, but sometimes intuition and caution should be prescribed. This was obviously not your fault, and I hope that you did eventually find everything you lost. Sorry that your New Year started in such a sucky way, but what goes up comes down and what goes down will shoot back up. Like a penguin eager to master flight! He/she will jump and soar, and though it will always will flop back down onto the barren ice it will also never stop jumping back into the clouds.

Interesting poem Christine. Would you mind elaborating on it a bit? What I interpreted from it (and I still am shaky on it myself) is that the tender and small events, memories, souvenirs of life are often left ignored and disappear from our sight. As a replacement, we consume ourselves with the "little awful things" of life (those objects or habits that hinder our life experiences) and allow them to siege our attention and affairs. Was I even close? I wouldn't be shocked if I looked into this too deeply or not deeply enough. Overall, I really like it :) Thank you!

Sorry Broderick, not too close to my original thoughts on that one, but its alright. You still had an interesting interpretation that I like a lot. You did indeed go a bit deeper into it than I did, and in a bit of a different direction, but I see your reasoning. I will elaborate on my reasoning a bit, even if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. For whatever reason, the only times I ever am inspired to write poetry are when little insignificant things happen to me and make me feel a bit frustrated. (One of my best poems was a result of being moved to a new desk in class.) In this case, I wrote the poem as a result of killing a large wolf spider in my house.

Getting back my PSAT scores today, it reminded me of one of the readings included in the test. It was an essay declaring that we (people in general) devalue the grandeur and wonder of certain things by setting expectations for them - in the essay, the writer used the discovery of the Grand Canyon and compared it to tourist visits to the historical site. The author claimed that because the discoverer of the Grand Canyon had no expectations for what he would uncover, he was able to fully appreciate and perceive the magnitude of the canyon. However, since tourists have taken out the discovery aspect of the canyon (through planned trips and paid tours) and set expectations of what they would see (through postcards, websites, photos, and other media outlets) they will never fully grasp the experience the discoverers at the time received. I couldn't help but silently nod (in my head of course) to the author's message. Is it wrong to say that we devalue experiences and events in our lives due to silent expectations we hold within us? Quick example, prom. Prom is often blasted upon various media outlets and many of us have a silent expectation of what it should look or feel like. If your expectations have been greatly influenced by media, your expectation may be that you will have a stunning outfit, the perfect guy/girl asking you to dance, accompanied by feelings of desire, love, and unwavering happiness. Not that this isn't attainable per say, but now there is a mental checklist that you must complete now to fully satisfy the experience - not completing may result in your disappointment, regardless of whether or not the night was memorable. So what do we do? I'm not entirely sure, as the argument could be made that we hold expectations to everything we do and are involved in. For now, my answer is be open. Change doesn't mean disappointment, it means a new direction. To wrap this up (yikes!) do your best to be appreciative of what you have and what you gain. Just because our story doesn't follow the plot we have wrote for ourselves, doesn't mean it isn't a great story to follow. Good night everyone!

Well, tomorrow is the big semester test for English. A part of me says that I should have utilized these past two hours on studying for said exam, but I'm glad I didn't. In those two hours I helped my little brother in fifth grade memorize 15 new spelling words for his big spelling test tomorrow, read a few short legends from the English textbook (which is like studying in a way) to both of my brothers, and delved all our child hearts into the heroic adventures of Cass, Max-Ernest, and Yo-Yoji from the Secret book series (shhh...it's a secret). I know that getting a high grade on the exam is essential (which is why I am reviewing the English textbook & vocab. now), but so is family. I enjoyed explaining new things to them (like the meaning of "irksome" and context indicators), occasionally slurring or mispronouncing words due to my braces, and listening to their commentary and theories on certain chapters/events. I love my little brothers very much, and losing two hours of my studying time was more than worth it. Now I hit the books!

One last test tomorrow! For me anyways, I have 6th period US History. I am so relieved that it is almost over. I believe that these are the most stressful semester exams that I have gone through in a long time, and I used to have 6 classes! Mrs. O, today was challenging. Which is a good thing, for if it was not then I would be in the wrong program. I think what really got me on the test was the vocabulary, because it was word-for-word one of our previous vocab. tests and I didn't have it to study! I felt like the paper was taunting me in a way, but nevertheless I think I did well (I know not a perfect paper, but well). Well, back to the two essays for Mrs. Dye. Break a leg on your remaining tests everyone - if you have a remaining test that is. NIGHT!

Hello everyone, I hope your first week of the Spring Term has been going smoothly. To be honest, it has been a rocky week for me. Academically, I have a ton of work to do for both of my class schedules (high school and college). Internally, its been quite a rollercoaster as well. Fortunately, there is a solution for both of these obstacles - time and work. It would be naive of me to say that this fixes every problem, but it works most of the time. Happy weekend everyone!

So, I'm awkwardly, yet comfortably sitting on my bed and listening to my favorite playlist from years ago. I find it so weird how much our music has changed. Nowadays, a song will get ranked number one for repeating the SAME. THREE. WORDS, over, and over again. What the heck!? What ever happened to the artists actually writing their own music and them actually recording their own voice rather than using super fancy microphones which make them sound like they're singing onto a giant fan... Okay, that's my mini rant for the night... I miss the late 90's/early 2000's music. That's my fav.

I have to present a speech for my Communications class tomorrow. It will be my first speech for that class. It will also be the stupidest, strangest, and perhaps the most boring speech that I have ever had to assault an audience's senses with.Wish me luck, so that my grade doesn't end up entirely irreparable.

I have trouble hating the Loman brothers, Biff and Happy. I do hope I am not alone when I say that those two boys are easy to hate (not that they should per say, but that they are easy to hate). Reflecting upon them three words appear in my head: cocky (or overweening), brute, and ignorant. Whether or not these words are justified or not, and regardless of the resonating disdain I have for the characters, I have trouble committing myself to a certain position. Do I hate or sympathize for the brothers? Now, where did sympathy come from? First off, humans are plastic - plastic in the sense that we [humans] can adapt to various environments. This human characteristic is what allows one individual to thrive in a cultural environment that differs from his/her birthplace. For example, a newborn baby from New York will thrive in Japan as he/she grows up there. Culture - how to be human, and how to make meaning of the world around oneself - is not innately inherited for any individual, it is taught. Now, is it wrong for Biff and Happy to act the way they do when their culture/upbringing has taught them to do so? Is it their fault for adapting to the environment of which they were brought up in? What is considered right and wrong, selfish and generous, hallow and sacrilege, etc. greatly fluctuates in meaning and practice across the globe/nations/states/communities. Considering all of this (which is only a fraction of the argument that could be made) I have trouble decisively hating the Lomans. My own culture and experiences have taught me to be wary around characters like them, but it doesn't change the fact that they may be victims to a sub-culture that failed to assimilate into the larger American culture surrounding it - thus making itself self destructive in certain aspects.

Though I am grateful that I am in this program, do you ever get those weeks where there is just too much on your shoulders - that the world seems to just be draining and draining your resources (emotionally, mentally, physically) without giving back? Well this week (kind of a week and a half actually) has been just that. If you guys noticed I didn't post a journal this week this is the reason why. Finally, I feel recharged - despite having my braces adjusted - and I am nearly ready for next week. I hope that for the next journal I can make it up to everyone for missing this one, for its too late to time travel now. Everyone have a safe, fun, and/or relaxing weekend! Bonne nuit et á plus tard!

Wow its been a while since I've written one of these. Or really writing at all, by my standards. In my computer I have hundreds of pages of writing, mainly stories, most of which never deviate from either an incredibly dark theme or an incredibly farcical one. Reading through these things now, sometimes I wonder why I ever really decided to quit writing for fun. I very much enjoy looking back on the morbid fantasies and risible ramblings of my past. Perhaps I should make a few more to look back upon in another couple of years.

This person felt guilty through the weekend and made a personal appointment to apologize as soon as possible, and at the same time I can't help remembering how so many people offend others daily (even their friends) and not feel a tinge of remorse. Thank you Anon for being an awesomely kind and thoughtful person! See you guys in class in...3 minutes :)

Respect vs. Standing up for oneself
Reply
Broderick Sterrett
2/19/2015 01:43:04 pm
You are right that respect is in the "eye of the beholder" per say. Some view respect as a threshold that one crosses at a certain age, while others view respect as a threshold that one crosses after attaining a "certain" degree of accumulated experiences/abilities/expertises/etc. Personally, the latter suits me. Then again, one usually coincides with the other. There are of course outliers, however there is a somewhat clear connection between the two facets of this argument (two faces to the same coin). In "Things Fall Apart", for prime example, the elderly were respected, but an elder [or fellow Ibo man] would be more so highly respected for their experiences/abilities/etc. Also, in "Death of a Salesman", Linda Loman demands respect and attention towards her husband [when addressing Biff and Happy Loman] for all the work Willy had invested into his firm and family. The point I am trying to make is one of agreement; respect is often associated with age as well as experience. Furthermore, it is often rare that an elderly individual scathed through life without having experienced respectable things.

It was strange and comforting being Bernard in this class' reading of "Death of a Salesman" as I can relate with him quite a bit. However, I couldn't help draw some similarities between Biff and I. One of the sole purposes behind literature is to tell a story that will mean something to the reader. Themes, motifs, characters, plots, settings, time periods, obstacles, triumphs, they are all conduits to a grander purpose - knowledge, education, discovery. I enjoyed this semester's reading, not only because it was a play.

So, lately I watched Rain Man for the first time and I got extremely interested in the story. It is based off the true person Kim Peek who was an autistic sevant and I just saw something he once commented that really made me think about how each individual person views the world so differently. Peek said, "Recognizing and respecting differences in others, and treating everyone like you want them to treat you, will help make our world a better place for everyone. Care...and be your best. You don't have to be handicapped to be different. Everyone is different!" He realized how positively people reacted to his story and noticed how they wished they were more like him. He actually didn't like or want the attention and wanted to make it clear to everyone that you don't have to have a disability or handicap to be different or unique, because everyone has heir own specialties and positive attributes and he felt he shouldn't be idolized because of his. I thought that was very powerful and it made me wonder if maybe we think about things much more simply, we would come to clearer conclusions, just as Kim Peek did.

Having finished "The Death of a Salesman," I have been left very astonished. It is amazing how the play would seem comedic and so light hearted at times, but ended in the most somber way. I really do Willy had a problem, and I feel as if he has passed that onto Happy, who greatly resembles his father. I also strongly believe that Biff is the protagonist of the story because of his ability to change for the better and also attempt to help his family, where as Willy and Happy seemed content, in a way, with the way they were.

Ok, I have a confession. This isn't the first time I have seen a Dustin Hoffman movie. Actually, I have been familiar with Hoffman for almost my entire life without realizing it! I recognized his voice almost instantaneously after the movie in class started to progress. Hook, Kung Fu Panda (1&2), Finding Neverland, The Tale of Despereaux, and now Death of a Salesman. Those are the movies that recognized him from, but according to Google Hoffman starred in at least 51 movies (some of which I am sure you have seen too)! It is not very surprising seeing how great of an actor he is proving himself to be in class. I'm excited for tomorrow!

I have to come to what some may call a peace. How long this will last I do not know, but I will do my best to refer back to it. High school is often a stressful time. We are planning our future. What college, if any, do we want to enroll in? What degree? What career? Where do we want to live? This can be quite stressful and confusing, not knowing how the future will pan out. So where do you go? Forward. I don't know where my dreams will take me, or what they may become later down the road. Regardless, I will move forward. Easily said than done? True, but its a start. Confidence is the first step in taking...a step.

Leave it to me to get ridiculously sick as soon as I get a tiny break. My day can be summed up in four Ts: tissues, Tarantino, tea, and, of course, tossing and turning while attempting to sleep. Guess it's time to rewatch some other great movies, maybe Fight Club or the Breakfast Club, hmm that's a lot of clubs. Maybe I'll stick with one actor or director and just go with it, possibly Dicaprio's next. The 20's in history has got me thinking about the Great Gatsby. Ooh what a useless ramble this was, but maybe it gave you insight into the boredom that sickness presents. As for movies, or anything else entertaining, anyone have any suggestions? Hope everyone else is alive and well and enjoying their almost-break much more than I am. Good luck on the oral quiz tomorrow!

Of course, there's money and acceptance, but there's also family to worry about, and it seems like things just keep piling on. I'm aware that we all come from different walks of life. Some of us have been lucky to find people from similar stock, and others are lucky to have uncoupled from such links in a chain. I've always known that our circumstances [whatever they be] were diverse, and that what brought one student here is not the same for another student. Yet here we are. It is remarkable that regardless of our past (however it may have shaped us to this point) we all are here.

If you have your own copy and you don't mind in-book annotations, feel free to make them in the book and be ready for Mrs. Osazuwa then. Those that do not have their own copy of the play or do not want to annotate all over their copy, remember to have a small notebook or journal set aside with annotations of the play inside. Also, don't forget to use page numbers to make sense of the citations or inferences. Just a reminder. Bonne nuit!!!

I just had a scary realization...we have about 7 weeks of school left before we have successfully completed a year here at CSNHS. It's gratifying knowing that I have survived a year of CSNHS (there were times when I wasn't sure if I was adept for this program), and I am glad that I have made the friends that I have made. It is saying goodbye that terrifies me. Not only have I made some great friends in the junior class, I have also had the pleasure of befriending some great seniors. They will go on to college or wherever the wind may take them, much like how we will be next year, but a goodbye can still be a little heartbreaking even when you know they will go and do amazing things. This reality has plagued me all year, but seeing the last sands fall has reminded me.

Curious. In a hallway filled with at least 15 high school students, around 10 of them are engaged on some form of technology. However, conversation is still quite alive and upbeat (laughter, eye contact, interaction, etc.). The first statement [alone] would had denoted the decline of physical-social interaction and the rise of cyber-social interaction. Combined with the second statement, the inference changes. I pose the question of whether our generation a) adapted to the rise of technology and has since learned to be expertly social in person as well as (even simultaneously) by internet, or b) is one of the last waves of generations that have and mostly will not likely abuse technology in regards to social interaction and/or diminish the importance of physical person-to-person social interaction, or c) this is an abnormality. What do you think?

Lots of work to be done, and once I do it, it seems rather thankless. My grades are still slipping, my challenges keep piling up, depression keeps sneaking into my head (or being shoved into it mercilessly by tragedy) and everything seems too fervent to make sense of. I've come to a realization - time is plentiful. Hard to believe when most of it is consumed in our work, however I have learned that there is a large chunk of our time "wasted" in sleeping. "Wasted" as in for some of us we lose precious and potentially productive time in sleep. For some people, sleep is a necessity for normal brain function (and at times I wish I didn't require this), hence wasted is the incorrect term while "wasted" suffices. In the night, though silence and shadows prevail, there is a peace and calm that is often rare in the day. Currently, I am sitting on carpeted floor, surrounded by nothing more than what seems to be discarded footprints of daylife. To my immediate left lies a floor mat that is not only crooked, but is partially rumpled on the right corner facing away from the door. Again to my left, yet a floor above, is a light projected from my youngest brother's room - for he had fallen asleep before flipping the switch back (reading light). Around the house there are several other articles of daylife to be found (half-empty mugs, messy bedrooms, misplaced marker, etc.), yet details like these are often taken for granted and therefore assigned very little meaning. I too have taken many things for granted, which only supports my claim that the night has a keen and calm atmosphere. Now, [quite unfortunately] I must return to rest. Good night everyone, and please do your best to find some place or time in your life to find such an atmosphere like the night. An atmosphere where if you observe freely things come into focus, and where time is a valued and plentiful capital.

Well, I think I botched my ACT quite a bit. A few things contributed to this, I'm sure, such as my sleep deprived and highly distracted state, compounded with the time limit. Damnation upon that time limit. I can not make up information and write a well-substantiated essay on a topic I know absolutely nothing about within 25 minutes. I simply cannot.

Does anyone ever wonder what happen if we didn't have chaos? Obvious replies may be world peace, end of hunger, end of injustice, etc. However, when are we ever not experiencing chaos? Chaos is defined as the "state of utter confusion or disorder" from Dictionary.com. When does life ever go the way we want (exactly how we want it)? How many times do plans change daily? How many surprises do we experience from moment to moment? Our entire life is chaos, a state of disorder (even confusion). Am I wrong?

So, what would happen if there was no chaos? My answer is the end of life. The end in regards to what life means to us, here on this planet. Without chaos in our lives, we could never experience every heart-lifting high and crushing low. Life would be a bore, with nothing new or possibly risky to do. There would be no chance to help a friend through a bad day; there would be no chance to have one of those abstract (or seemingly insignificant) coincidences shape us from that point on; there would be no chance to experience life to its utmost potential. In conclusion, the message behind this off-beat post is to remember that when life becomes far too chaotic, it is that same chaos that plunges you into the sunlight at the end of the day.

I agree. There definitely seems to be a larger (omnipresent per se) laws that contribute to how the universe expresses itself. I mostly believe that order and chaos are the same thing, if not exactly what you have stated. However, I decided to post such content under the assumption (though it proves paradoxical) that nothing can be known - thus "chaos" and "order" may/may not be identical. Also, when life is kicking us along, rather than overtly enabling us, it may feel as though chaos is very distinct from order. In essence, I used those two bases to write my post.

There was a time when I thought I would escape the world of social media during this generation, but it has finally happened. Two days ago (maybe yesterday, I'm sick), I got a Facebook account! I had hoped to keep this account academic, for I entertain the possibility that social media will either hinder [in-person] social interactions and/or hinder said social interactions; however, I see how in just a few days/hours friends can connect with each other. Maybe it won't be so bad if I incorporate some social connections with my academics. After all, is that not what school is for most teenagers (myself included). Seeing how friends have moved away, and soon a whole group of people I just met this year will be gone, Facebook might be a necessary evil - well, maybe not that evil.

Wow the end of the year is here and the last day of school is approaching! It's still so crazy to me because I remember the first day of school like it was yesterday.

Gosh, this year went by fast. I know that's a cliche, but it did for me.

Congratulations to all those that have survived your first year of CSNHS! In the beginning of the year, I posted about change and how we aren't alone in this new direction in our education. I want to rephrase that, if I may. Change usually divides us from the rest, and it has. Change usually inspires and promotes us to be better than we were before. Change is a consistency that will continually gives us chances to depart and grow from our old ways. Ask this of you know, those of you that are taking the time to listen to little ol' me. How have you changed this year? When reflecting upon this, you may remember times that were harsh and others where it was gratifying. Thank you for being my English class this year, you have all inspired me to do my best and I look forward to seeing familiar faces next year. For those of you that will not be coming back next year, thank you for everything and I am grateful that I got to know you.
